Joint statement on behalf of the Dialogue & Development Forum, Centre of my Right for Support for the Rights and Freedom, and Geneva International Centre for Justice

55th session of the Human Rights Council

28th March 2024

Delivered by Gilma Villatoro /GICJ

Thank you,

A few days ago, the world commemorated the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This had profound and lasting impacts on both enslaved individuals and the societies involved. Systemic racism persists globally, denying people of African descent equal opportunities and rights.

In Latin America, studies have shown that in at least 18 countries, Afro descendants live with a broad range of disadvantages related to poverty, employment, maternal and child health, and lack access to adequate housing and basic services, such as safe water and sanitation. We are still living in the era of systemic racism against Afro- descendants.

While we applaud efforts and the advancements to prevent racial discrimination and improve equally for all, in the Americas and European countries, institutional and individual racism continues to rise.

In the United States alone, economic, medical, and gaps in the justice system are rooted in the legacy of slavery, segregation and discrimination enduring disparities beginning at birth with pregnancy related deaths.

The Dialogue & Development Forum, Geneva International Centre for Justice, and Centre of my Right for Support for the Rights and Freedom call for urgent action to address the systemic racism faced by Afro-descendant communities. We emphasize the need for practical measures to combat discrimination and improve the lives of those affected. This includes enforcing anti-discrimination laws, investing in education and healthcare, promoting economic empowerment, and strengthening accountability mechanisms.
