GICJ and Ma'onah Call for Urgent Action to Protect Palestinian Women and Children

Item 2: Interactive dialogue on the report of the High Commissioner on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory

Statement of Association Ma’onah for Human Rights and Immigration and Geneva International Centre for Justice

55th session of the Human Rights Council

29th February 2024

Delivered by Sofya Losikova / GICJ

Thank you,

We are deeply troubled by the transgressions outlined in the report of the High Commissioner on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including violations against women, children, and essential civilian infrastructure.

Israeli security forces' actions depict a harrowing reality for Palestinian women and children, with reports of killings, beatings, ill-treatment, and sexual assault, including threats of rape, highlighting the abhorrent tactics employed. Indiscriminate detentions of thousands of Palestinians, including political figures, journalists, and women’s rights defenders – often marked by brutality and inhumane treatment – constitute grave violations of fundamental human rights, amounting to torture.

Moreover, the strikes launched by Israel across Gaza inflicted significant damage, with women and children disproportionately ravaged. Maternal and child health services have been severely compromised, aggravating the risk of malnutrition and disease.

The deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as the closure of Gaza crossings meant to impede essential supplies, further exacerbate Israel’s genocidal agenda against Palestinians.

In light of these egregious violations, Association Ma'onah and Geneva International Centre for Justice call upon the Council to take immediate steps in ensuring the protection and rights of Palestinian people, including the provision of essential needs and the prosecution of those responsible for international crimes.
