HRC57 - Side-event: Climate Change in the Context of Armed Conflict - The Situation in Yemen

Monday, 7 October 2024 - United Nations/Geneva

Yemen is highly vulnerable to climate change-related impacts such as droughts, severe floods, sudden disease outbreaks, pests, changes in rainfall patterns, increased frequency and intensity of storms, and sea level rise. All of these factors threaten the country's already fragile state. Additionally, the Houthi militia's policies have further degraded the environment, exacerbating the climate crisis. These factors have severe negative effects on the entire population, as well as key vulnerable sectors within the country.

Speakers:

Walid Al-Qadimi:
First Deputy Governor of Hudaydah Governorate in western Yemen, and the representative of the local authority at this seminar. He is widely recognized for his development efforts in relief and reconstruction work in the governorate, which has been severely affected by recent climate-related events.

Abdullah al-Hubaishi:
Executive Director of the Humanitarian Action Cell in Yemen, the largest humanitarian relief organization operating in western Yemen. He is also a human rights activist and a frequent participant in many international, regional, and local conferences focused on defending human rights and promoting the Sustainable Development Goals.

Mohammed Al-Mahdi:
A well-known Yemeni journalist and media professional with numerous contributions to international and Arabic satellite channels and newspapers. He has participated in several conferences on the situation in Yemen. He also volunteers for various Yemeni human rights organizations.

Moderator:

Gautier Boyrie:
