Item 10: Interactive Dialogue on the Oral Update of the Independent Expert on the Situation of Human Rights in the Central African Republic
9 July 2024
Statement of Meezaan Center for Human Rights and the Geneva International Centre for Justice
Delivered by Laraib Ahmed / GICJ
Thank you, Madame Vice-President,
We thank the independent expert for his informative oral update, and we commend the Central African Republic's efforts towards peace and reconciliation.
However, ongoing instability and severe human rights violations are of grave concern. The security situation remains dire, with armed groups perpetrating violence against civilians, particularly women and children. Millions urgently need humanitarian assistance, emphasising the necessity of effectively implementing the Political Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation and the Joint Roadmap for Peace.
Ending impunity and ensuring justice for human rights violations is critical as highlighted by the independent expert. We call for thorough investigations and the strengthening of judicial mechanisms, including the Special Criminal Court and increased cooperation with the International Criminal Court.
The protection of civilians, especially vulnerable groups, must be prioritised. We condemn the use of children by armed groups and urge their immediate release. Implementing a national child protection plan and ratifying international child rights protocols are crucial.
We emphasise the zero-tolerance policy on sexual violence and the importance of justice for victims. Meezaan Centre for Human Rights and Geneva International Centre for Justice support these efforts and call upon all stakeholders to uphold human rights and promote justice in the Central African Republic.
Thank you.
