HRC54: GICJ and Ma'onah Call for Upholding of Human Rights in Syria

Human Rights Council 54th Session

11th September-14th  October 2023

Item 4: Statement of Association of Ma’onah for Human Rights and Immigration and Geneva International Centre for Justice

Interactive Dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry

on the Syrian Arab Republic

22 September 2023

Delivered by Tamir Boldbaatar

We thank the Independent International Commission of Inquiry for the report on Syria.

More than a decade of complex restrictive measures has intensified the multiple cruel impacts on every sector of the Syrian economy, trade blockages, enjoyment of fundamental rights, and humanitarian assistance. The massive earthquakes in February and further hardships require special protection to ensure continued delivery of humanitarian aid to Syrians. The population lives in life-threatening conditions.

Unlawful airstrikes on Aleppo international airport led to temporary suspension of UN Humanitarian Air Services flights. The attacks by pro-government forces in Idlib, in western Aleppo also caused the deaths of many innocent victims. Arbitrary arrests and detention by government forces have continued to no end. Hundreds of Syrian refugees and migrants were returned from Lebanon. Some of whom were detained by the Syrian Arab Army or armed gangs in overcrowded facilities or ordered to do military service. We are also concerned about reports of bribes being demanded to avoid imprisonment. The list of human rights violations continues to shock and alarm.

Ma’onah and Geneva for Justice appreciate the committee’s work and call on the International Community to do more to protect fundamental human rights, and uphold humanitarian principles. We demand the Syrian authorities cease all instances of torture, inhuman treatment, punishment and direct attacks on civilians. All external militias must stop interference and Syrian affairs especially those linked to Iran.

I thank you.
